With a March 29th date set, the Shenandoah Iowa Education Foundation is busy preparing for their fourth annual “Excellence in Education” banquet which will be held at the Elks Lodge in Shenandoah and is open to the public.
There will be a social hour starting at 5:00 PM with dinner to follow at 6:00 PM, catered by J Bruner’s.
As far as the program itself, the foundation will honor teachers and staff members who have at least 25 years of service in the education field, the staff “Spirit Awards” will be presented and there will be entertainment by the high school music department, under the direction of Ashleigh and Elliott Smith.
This year, the foundation selected two worthy recipients for their Distinguished Alumni of the Year award.
The first recipient is Bruce Stevens, a SHS 1960 graduate. Stevens graduated from Penn (University of Pennsylvania) and still resides on the East Coast. In 1985, Stevens became the ninth president of Steinway and Sons and still is the longest serving non-family member to hold that title in the company’s 150 year history. Stevens is also known for his donation to the Gladys-Wirsig Jones Auditorium of a new Steinway piano in the 1990’s.
The second Distinguished Alumni selected is Margaret Fischer Brady. Brady, a 1980 graduate, became a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and owns and operates Healthy Tails Retreat in Shenandoah. She has also purchased and renovated the Johnson Brothers Mill and it now goes by “The Market at the Mill”, a place where the community can find an array of goods for sale.
